Physics

From high school years, I have always been interested in physics. In this page, I grouped several contributions related to this field. Some articles (such as those dedicated to Galileo and Newton) are more devoted to an historical and epistemological point of view, whereas other (such as my PhD thesis) are quite technical.

A portrait of Galileo.

Galileo Galilei, the birth of the modern scientific thought (2001-2003)

Galileo Galilei is surely one of the scientists who gave birth to the modern way of making science. He has been among the firsts to attribute an outmost importance to experimentation. He fully understood the descriptive and predictive force of mathematics in the description of the physical world. In this article, we will discuss about the most important discoveries of Galileo as well as the processes against him held by the Inquisition.

A portrait of Newton.

Isaac Newton, the quest for infinity (2001-2003)

Isaac Newton has probably been one of the most brilliant brains applied to science. He invented calculus, the most efficient way to handle infinity.

A particle trace.

The atomic hypothesis (1998)

A discussion on matter and fundamental interactions in particle physics.

A photo of LEP.

Our vision of the world (1999)

An epistemological discussion about breakthroughs of physics at the beginning of XX century.

Interference.

Some ideas, from renaissance physics to quantum mechanics (pdf, 2003)

A reflection about the change of point of view operated by Galileo Galilei and about why the Renaissance has been a turning point in the history of science. This paper ends with a discussion about some quantum mechanics concepts, such as the indetermination principle and the wave/particle duality.

A waveguide mode.

Optical amplification and integrated optics on glass (2003)

A brief discussion about the interest of all-optical amplification in fiber optic telecommunication systems. Some information about ion-exchange on glass is provided.

Propagation in a bent waveguide.

Application of the three-dimensional aperiodic Fourier modal method using arc elements in curvilinear coordinates (pdf, 2012)

A study of the Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA) for the propagation of electromagnetic field in bent waveguides. The variant employed is called Aperiodic Fourier Modal Method (AFMM). This paper was published in Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) and is made available as an electronic reprint with the permission of OSA. The paper can be found at the following URL on the OSA website: http://www.opticsinfobase.org/josaa/abstract.cfm?uri=josaa-29-3-367 . Systematic or multiple reproduction or distribution to multiple locations via electronic or other means is prohibited and is subject to penalties under law.

An asymmetric Y-junction.

Mise au point d'un duplexeur pompe/signal à base de guides segmentés en optique intégrée sur verre (pdf, 2006)

My PhD thesis (in french), describing the study and realization of a pump/signal multiplexer for optical amplifiers. The chosen structure (an asymmetric Y junction with a segmented branch) allows to obtain good characteristics in terms of crosstalk and insertion losses, on a very wide band. This characteristics makes this device interesting for wavelength division multiplexing telecommunication systems. This thesis is freely available on the Thèses en ligne website.
